The Northern Territory Council of Service Inc. (NTCOSS) is a peak body for the Northern Territory social and community service sector and an advocate for those who are most disadvantaged.
NTCOSS is currently seeking a Communications Officer.
Job Description
Position Purpose: Ensure the provision of effective communication which contributes to the NTCOSS vision and goals by playing a lead role in NTCOSS external messaging such as media and public campaigns
Industrial Instrument: The Fair Work Act 2009 and the Northern Territory Council of Social Service Incorporated Enterprise Agreement 2010 (NTCOSS EA)
Terms of Employment: Part Time (22.5 hours per week) until June 2013
Salary: $63,980.80 p.a. pro rata
Other Basic Entitlements: 9% Superannuation paid to a fund of employee choice. 6 weeks annual leave at normal pay plus 17.5% leave loading. Grace leave for the working days occurring between Christmas and New Year public holidays, at normal pay.
Reports to: Executive Director of NTCOSS and Sector Development Coordinator
Location: Darwin (33 Bayfield St, Malak)
Background to the position:
As the peak body of the social and community sector NTCOSS regularly seeks to make public comment on relevant issues as well as respond to media requests where appropriate.
NTCOSS also communicates regularly with our membership.
This position will work closely with the NTCOSS Executive Director and Program Coordinator.
Statement of Duties:
Summary of main duties to be performed, listed with equal priority:
Media
- Development of media releases
- First point of contact for media enquiries
- Research and recommend strategies to respond to media issues
- Proactively identify media opportunities
Writing / Editing /Resource Development
- Take a key role in writing, editing and developing NTCOSS submissions, policy papers, public documents and other external communications
Sector Development
- Responding to sector development opportunities around media which may include development and delivery of agreed training and mentoring.
- Contribute to the organisation of NTCOSS events
Undertake other tasks as requested by the Executive Director or Sector Development Coordinator

It is anticipated that the Communications Officer will have:
- a strong background in communications, media or public campaigning,
- excellent written and verbal communication skills with the capacity to liaise with a wide range of people from varied cultural backgrounds,
- experience in editing, reviewing and finalising media releases and publications,
- the ability to work flexibly with limited supervision, meet deadlines and work on
- multiple tasks in a high pressured environment,
- well developed and current knowledge of NGO sector issues in the NT,
- a current NT drivers licence, police clearance and working with children card.
